Zonea User Guide

Zonea turns a touchscreen into the control surface your software has always deserved. Build it yourself (faders, knobs, jog wheels, buttons, meters), lay them out exactly how you work, and drive any MIDI software on the planet. Nothing is soldered in place. If you can imagine the layout, you can build it.

The ARM build is in its final testing phase and is not available for download yet. This manual already documents it, so anything you read here about ARM describes how that build will behave once it is released.

Everything else applies to the Windows x86 64-bit version, which you can download today.

What Zonea is

Zonea is two things at once, and it helps to know which one you are looking at.

It is a control surface: a full-screen layout of faders, knobs, buttons, jog wheels, pads and meters that sends MIDI to your music, DJ, lighting or video software, exactly like a hardware controller would. Your software cannot tell the difference: to it, Zonea is simply a MIDI device — called Zonea-1, or plain Zonea depending on the MIDI engine — plugged into the computer.

And it is the designer that builds that surface. Every control is placed by you, sized by you, coloured by you, and assigned by you. There is no fixed layout to live with, no manufacturer deciding you get eight faders when you needed twelve.

What that makes possible

  • A controller shaped like your workflow, not like a product someone decided to manufacture.
  • 144 pages per layout. One page for mixing, one for effects, one per deck, one for lighting. A button takes you between them instantly.
  • Controls that light up. When your software sends feedback, faders move and buttons light on their own, so the surface always shows the real state.
  • Buttons that press keyboard shortcuts in any Windows program, including whole recorded sequences of them.
  • Live video on the surface: camera feeds or output from other apps, sitting right next to the controls.
  • Windows from other programs, framed inside your layout, so a waveform or a mixer strip from your DAW becomes part of the surface.
  • Your own artwork instead of the built-in graphics, if you want the surface to look like nothing else.
A word about the word "template"

Throughout Zonea, a finished surface (every widget, page, colour and assignment you created) is called a template. Saving your work means saving a template. Templates are single files, so you can back them up, copy them to another computer, or share them.

What you need

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11. There are two versions of Zonea: one for ordinary Intel/AMD computers and one for ARM computers. They work the same, with a few exceptions covered in The ARM version, which needs Windows 11 24H2 or newer.
  • A screen you can touch: this is what Zonea is built around. It runs perfectly well with only a mouse, but a touchscreen is where it comes alive, and a screen that accepts several fingers at once is better still.
  • Software that accepts MIDI: a DAW, DJ software, a lighting desk, a video mixer. If it can learn a MIDI controller, it can be driven by Zonea.
  • An internet connection, once, to activate after you buy. After that Zonea works offline day to day; it only uses the network to check for a new version when it starts (silently; no connection, no problem) and if you ever move your licence to another computer.

Installing

Zonea comes as a single installer that also sets up everything it depends on. You do not need to hunt down any extra components yourself.

  1. Check which version you need. Almost every Windows PC is Intel or AMD and needs the standard installer. If you have an ARM machine (some newer Surface and Snapdragon laptops), download the ARM installer instead. To check: Settings › System › About and look at System type.
  2. Run the installer. Windows will ask for permission to make changes. Zonea needs it, because it installs system components. Say yes.
  3. Let it work. It installs Zonea plus the pieces it needs, quietly and without asking you anything else. On the standard version you will see it pause on "Installing Virtual MIDI Ports"; that step is what creates the MIDI connection your software will see.
  4. Restart when asked. The installer will ask to restart Windows at the end. Do it. The MIDI connection is not fully in place until you do.
  5. Open Zonea from the desktop shortcut.
There is nothing to choose

The installer deliberately asks no questions about where to install or which parts you want. Everything goes to a fixed location and everything is installed. This is on purpose: it removes an entire category of "it doesn't work" that comes from half-installed setups.

There is exactly one thing it does not install: Microsoft's Windows MIDI Services, the new MIDI system that Windows is moving to. It does not need to: that system ships as part of Windows 11 (24H2 and newer) and Zonea talks to it directly, nothing to download, nothing extra to install. On the standard version Zonea creates its own MIDI port and works perfectly without it; on the ARM version Windows MIDI Services is the MIDI system Zonea runs on, which is why ARM requires Windows 11 24H2 or newer. See MIDI Engine for what it is for.

Where your own work is kept worth knowing

Your templates, settings and licence live in a Zonea folder inside your Documents, completely separate from the program itself. That has one very useful consequence: uninstalling Zonea never deletes your work, and reinstalling or updating finds all your templates exactly where you left them. If you want to back up everything you have built, that Documents folder is the thing to copy.

Updating keeps everything

Install the new version over the old one. Your templates, your settings and your activation all stay as they were.

When a new version is available, the main screen replaces the version number with an orange Update button showing the new version number. Clicking it warns you that Zonea will close and send you to the website to download the new version. Save your work first.

Trying it, and activating after you buy

The trial

The trial has no time limit: no countdown, no watermark, and Zonea never closes itself. Design as long as you want; the single restriction is in Performance mode:

  • Design mode is completely unrestricted. Build across all 144 pages, move between them freely, save and load templates. Nothing is disabled and nothing is watermarked in your saved work.
  • Performance mode runs on pages 1 and 2. Navigating to page 3 or beyond shows a dialog with the option to buy the full license; Cancel returns you to page 1. Everything you built on higher pages stays in your template, ready for the moment you activate.

If you use one of a few open-source creative apps, Zonea can also be free for as long as that app is on screen. See Free with open-source apps.

Activating

Activation uses the email and password of your account on the store where you bought Zonea. There is no serial number to type or lose.

  1. On the main screen, find the INFO panel at the bottom left. While unactivated it shows two boxes: User Email and User Password. The eye icon reveals what you typed, in case of a stubborn password.
  2. Enter your store account details and press Activate.
  3. On success you will see "Activation successful! Restarting..." and Zonea restarts itself. When it comes back, the licence line reads Activated and the sign-in boxes are replaced by the deactivation controls described below.

If you have not bought yet, Get Your License opens the checkout page in your browser. Zonea steps out of the way while you do that. See the main screen for how to bring it back.

Moving your licence to another computer

Your licence covers a limited number of machines, so if you replace a computer (or reinstall Windows, which counts as a new machine), you may need to free a slot. Once activated, the INFO panel offers exactly that: sign in again and press Deactivate. Zonea confirms with "License released! Restarting...", returns to demo mode, and that slot is free to use elsewhere.

Do this before you wipe or sell the old machine. It is much easier than recovering a slot afterwards.

If activation is refused

Zonea tells you exactly what went wrong. Here is what each message means:

Please enter both email and password.
One of the two boxes is empty.
Invalid email or password.
The details do not match your store account. Try signing in on the website to confirm them.
No Zonea license found.
The account is fine, but it has never purchased Zonea. Check you are using the same account you bought with.
Order in process or pending payment.
Your purchase exists but the payment has not cleared yet. Wait for the confirmation email, then try again.
Limit reached (X/Y) activations. or Activation limit reached.
Every machine slot on your licence is in use. Free one with Deactivate on a computer you no longer use.
Access denied. Please update your software.
This version is too old to activate. Download the current one.
Network error / Server error
Zonea could not reach the store. Check your connection, and whether a firewall or VPN is in the way.
Could not create license files…
Zonea was not allowed to save the licence. Check that you can write to Documents\Zonea\Licences — a sync tool, a read-only Documents folder or antivirus protection is the usual cause.

Free with open-source apps

Zonea is free to use, with every feature unlocked, while one of a family of free and open-source creative apps is running. Zonea itself is a commercial app that is built with the help of open-source libraries, most of them MIT licensed and credited in the notices file installed with the app; the free mode is our way of supporting our favorite projects and the people who use them:

  • Mixxx: the leading open-source DJ software.
  • LMMS: the free, open-source music production studio.
  • OpenMPT: the legendary Windows tracker.
  • OBS: the open-source standard for live streaming and recording.
  • Ardour: the open-source DAW that professionals respect.

There is nothing to configure and nothing to buy. Start one of these apps and Zonea unlocks itself: the licence line on the main screen changes to Free (OSS) and the trial's page limit is gone, all 144 pages in Performance mode.

The rules

The app must be genuinely on screen. Time while it is minimised, hidden or closed adds up across the session: after about 45 minutes of it, Zonea simply returns to trial mode (Performance limited to pages 1 and 2; nothing closes and nothing is lost), and unlocks again as soon as the app is back on screen. Bringing it back clears the accumulated time only gradually, so a short minimise costs almost nothing but a long one still counts. Zonea re-checks every few seconds after anything changes, and about every twenty seconds once things are steady, so closing one app and opening another keeps the free mode going; allow a few seconds for the licence line to follow.

Any version counts, but it must be the real app

The free mode works with any version of these apps: older releases, the current one, and new ones from the day they come out, with no Zonea update needed. Builds you compiled yourself count too, and so does the OBS edition distributed on Steam. Zonea verifies that the running program is genuinely the app itself (through the publisher's digital signature or a check of the real installation), so a random program renamed to look like one of them does not unlock anything.

You can still buy and activate a regular licence at any time, exactly as described in the previous section: a paid licence works on its own, with no companion app required. Mixxx, LMMS, OpenMPT, OBS and Ardour are independent open-source projects, not affiliated with Zonea.

The main screen

This is where Zonea opens. It is the hub: from here you load a surface, choose which monitor to run on, or step out of the way.

The three big buttons

Load Latest
Re-opens the last template you used, straight into playing mode. This is the button you will press most. Before you have ever loaded a template it reads Nothing To Load; once a surface is open it reads Return and takes you straight back to it.
Create
Starts a blank surface with the editor open, ready to build something new.
Quit
Saves your settings and closes Zonea. It briefly reads Please Wait... while it tidies up.

Load: the template browser

Load opens a panel titled Load Template. It works in three taps:

  1. You see your folders. Tap one to open it.
  2. You see the templates inside. A ".." button appears to go back up.
  3. Tap a template and two buttons appear: Load & Touch (orange) loads it ready to play; Load & Edit (blue) loads it and opens the editor.

The browser goes one folder deep. Folders inside folders are not reachable here, so keep your library one level flat.

Templates always open on page 1, whichever page you were on when you saved.

Placement: choosing your screen

If you have more than one monitor, the row of numbered pads 1 to 6 chooses which one Zonea occupies. Tapping a number asks you to confirm, because Zonea restarts to make the move and unsaved work would be lost. Your choice is remembered for next time.

Not sure which screen is which? Identify flashes a big number on every monitor for three seconds.

Hide: getting Zonea out of the way

Hide makes the whole surface transparent so your desktop and other programs are visible and usable. Video widgets pause and the Windows taskbar comes back (if you had Zonea hiding it). All that remains of Zonea is a small blinking yellow arrow at the top-right of the screen.

Tap that arrow to bring everything back. Zonea returns to where it was: the same page, or the main menu if that is where you were. Hiding closes the editor, so if you were editing you come back in Performance mode.

Lock

Locks Windows, the same as pressing Windows+L. Useful when you step away from a machine mid-session.

The INFO panel

Bottom left. It answers the questions that come up most:

  • License: Demo Mode, Activated, or Free (OSS) when a free partner app is unlocking Zonea.
  • Multi Instances: whether more than one copy of Zonea may run at once.
  • Screens Detected and Running On Screen: how many monitors Zonea can see, and which one it is on.
  • MIDI Port Name: shown in orange. This is the name to look for in your software. Normally Zonea-1; plain Zonea when the MIDI Engine is Windows MIDI Services.
  • Software Version: replaced by an orange Update button when a newer version exists.

Edit mode and Performance mode

Zonea is always in one of two modes, and understanding the difference removes most early confusion.

Performance mode
The surface is live. Touching a fader moves it and sends MIDI. This is playing mode: what you use on stage or while working.
Edit mode
The editor is open and widgets stop responding. Touching a fader now selects it so you can move, resize and configure it. This is building mode.

That widgets go deaf in Edit mode is deliberate: you could not drag a fader into position if dragging it also blasted MIDI at your DAW.

Switching between them

  • Press Escape: the default way in and out. You can change this key; see Global settings.
  • Right-click anywhere on the surface opens the editor (this can be switched off, so an accidental right-click during a show does not throw you into edit mode).
  • The PERFORM button at the bottom of the editor closes it and goes live.
The single most useful shortcut in Zonea

Hold Shift + X (the left Shift) while the editor is open and your widgets go live without closing the editor. If it does not respond, click the surface first: the keys go to the surface, not to the editor's text boxes. Try the fader, check your DAW responded, let go, and you are back to editing with everything exactly where it was. It also locks the widgets in place while held, so you cannot nudge anything by accident.

Building a surface without this means closing and reopening the editor after every change. With it, building becomes a conversation.

The Editor: a tour

The editor is a floating panel that sits over your surface. It is where everything gets built, so it is worth five minutes learning its shape. You can drag it around by its title bar (the strip along the top reading "Editor") to get it out of the way of what you are working on.

How the editor is organised

The PERFORM button sits at the bottom right of the editor. It closes the editor and takes you live.

Three menu columns run across the editor: Menu on the far left (its groups are headed Super UI, Edit, Files and Menu), Objects in the centre, and Properties on the right (headed Properties, Protocol, Bridge and Global). Clicking an entry opens its panel in the space next to its column. Only one panel is open at a time; the exception is Video Mon, which opens on top of whatever else is showing.

Menu
Actions: undo, copy, delete, grid, save, load, and the Super UI commands that share widgets across pages.
Objects
The parts bin. Every widget you can place, sorted into categories.
Properties
Opens the panels that configure whatever you have selected: appearance, MIDI, skins, settings.

The title bar

Page 1
Which page you are looking at right now.
⌨ Shortcuts
The most important keyboard shortcuts, any time you need them. (The complete list is in Keyboard shortcuts.)
? Tooltips
Turn this on. Hovering over anything then explains what it does. The icon glows orange when active. It is off by default.
Hide Screen
Hides Zonea to show the desktop. The blinking arrow brings it back.
Turn on tooltips on day one

Zonea has over two hundred built-in explanations, several of them covering details this manual can only summarise. They cost nothing to leave on while you learn, and the button turns them off again in one click when you know your way around.

The panels you will open most

Properties
Colour, size, opacity, corner radius, text, rotation: how a widget looks.
Events
MIDI channels and numbers, and keyboard hotkeys: what a widget does.
Skins
Your own images, for widgets and for page backgrounds.
Adv. UI / Pages
The 144-page grid, transparent holes, capturing other applications' windows. (It sits at the top of the Menu column.)
Video Mon
Live video sources placed on the surface. (It is a category in the Objects column.)
Config
Global settings that apply to Zonea itself rather than to one widget.

Building your first surface

Here is the whole workflow end to end. Everything after this section is detail on individual steps.

  1. Start fresh. From the main screen, press Create.
  2. Pick a part. In Objects, click a category, say Sliders, then click the slider you want. Its icon flashes: the widget is now armed on your cursor.
  3. Place it. Click the spot on the canvas where you want it: the widget is created right there. Drag it to adjust, and drag the handles around its edge to resize. Hold Shift + S while resizing a button, slider, frame, shape or image to keep its proportions (knobs and other round widgets keep theirs on their own).
  4. Assign it. Open Events and set the MIDI Channel and Number. This is the address your software will listen to.
  5. Teach your software. Put your DAW into MIDI-learn, hold Shift + X in Zonea, and move the fader. Your software sees it and maps it.
  6. Make it yours. In Properties, set colours, size and label.
  7. Repeat for the rest of your controls. Copy and paste is faster than placing each one; see below.
  8. Save it. Menu › Save As, give it a folder and a name, press Save.
  9. Play. Press PERFORM or Escape.
Zonea does not save your work for you

There is no autosave. If Zonea closes unexpectedly, anything unsaved is gone. Save early, save often, especially while learning.

There is one safety net: when you save over an existing template, the previous version is not destroyed. It is moved to a _Backups folder in your template library, stamped with the date and time. If you overwrite something you needed, look there.

Selecting and arranging

  • Select several by dragging a box around them. Most properties then apply to the whole selection at once: set the colour once for twelve buttons.
  • Nudge precisely with the arrow keys, a fixed fine step independent of the grid. Zonea stops widgets at the page edge so you cannot accidentally push one onto the next page.
  • Line things up with Ctrl + G (Grid — snap to grid) and Ctrl + T (Ruler — alignment guides).
  • Copy with Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V. Copying a container brings its contents along.
  • Undo with Ctrl + Z, redo with Ctrl + Y.
  • Lock a finished widget with Ctrl + F so you stop moving it by mistake; Ctrl + E unlocks it. Ctrl + W allows moving but not resizing, and Ctrl + R adds rotation handles.
Left-hand Ctrl and Shift only

Editor shortcuts respond to the left Ctrl and Shift keys. If a shortcut seems dead, check which side of the keyboard your hand is on.

Stacking order

When widgets overlap, the Z Order buttons at the top of Properties decide who sits on top: Bottom, -1, +1, Top. Use it to put a label above a frame, or slide a decorative panel behind a row of buttons.

Containers: tidying a busy page

A Container (in Tools & More) is a folder that lives on the canvas. Drag widgets into it while editing, and in Performance mode touching the container's title bar expands it to reveal its contents; touching the bar again folds it away. Containers can hold containers. It is the answer to a page with more controls than room.

Properties: shaping a widget

Select a widget, open Properties, and you get the controls that apply to that kind of widget: a VU meter offers needle options, a slider does not. With several widgets selected you see only what they have in common (with very large selections, 64 widgets or more, the panel steps aside and just shows the count).

With nothing selected the panel reads No Properties Available. That is the answer to "why is this panel empty".

Colour

The Color Palette swatch opens the picker. Most widgets have two colours, an Outer and an Inner, and what they mean depends on the widget: on a button, Outer is the border (and the fill when it lights up) while Inner colours the text or icon; on a slider, Outer is the body and knob while Inner is the coloured bar; on a meter, the frame and the needle. The two arrow buttons copy one colour onto the other, and a hex box is there if you have an exact colour in mind.

Fill

Fill turns the widget's background on or off; off leaves just the outline and content, which is how you build surfaces that feel light rather than boxy. On VU meters, an extra Fill % box (0–100) then sets how dark that background is: lower is darker. It is the control for making a widget sit back quietly behind its own label.

Text and icons

Label
The text on the widget. It updates live as you type — no need to confirm.
Set Icon
Replaces the text with an icon from the built-in packs. Choose an Icon Pack first, then use the search box to find one. If the search seems to return nothing, check which pack is selected. Scale (40–70%, or type your own) sets how big the icon sits inside the widget, and Hide Border removes the widget's outline so the icon stands alone.

Removes the icon and brings the text back.
Font / Font Size / Bold
Typeface and weight. Ctrl + B toggles bold.

Shape, size and position

Opacity
1 to 100. 1 is nearly invisible, 100 fully solid.
Rotate
-360° to 360°. Angled fader banks and radial layouts live here.
Radius
Corner rounding. 0 is a sharp corner; push it high and a square becomes a circle.
Stroke
Border thickness. 0 removes the border. Decimals such as 1.5 are allowed: everything is drawn as vectors, so hairlines stay crisp at any size.
All
Applies the current stroke thickness across the whole template at once, the fastest way to make a surface feel consistent. Text widgets (labels and LCD displays) keep their own stroke.
Width / Height
Exact size in pixels, for when dragging is not precise enough.
Chain
When lit, the Height follows whatever Width you type (a 1:1 square) and the Height box dims. To keep a widget's existing proportions while resizing, use Shift + S instead.

Button behaviour

Push
Off (default) = a toggle: tap on, tap off, it stays where you left it. On = momentary: active only while your finger is down. Toggle suits mute and solo; momentary suits triggering a sample.
Blink
The button flashes while it is on, so you can spot active states across a busy page at a glance.
Slide
Lets you slide a finger across a row of buttons and trigger each in turn, like running a thumb along piano keys.
Group
Type the same group name on several buttons and they behave like radio buttons: turning one on turns the others off. Perfect for exclusive choices such as deck selection. The None button removes a button from its group.

Knob and wheel behaviour

Pan/Split
On a knob, turns it into a pan pot whose value grows out from the centre in both directions instead of up from zero. For a bipolar fader, use the CrossF slider style instead (see Slider style below). This is how bipolar controls should look.
Auto Rst
Arms the knob for auto-reset: it springs back to its home position when you release it while a Reset button is held or switched on. Without an active Reset button the knob keeps its position as usual. Pan knobs return to centre; other knobs return to the position they had when Auto Rst was first ticked: tick it while the knob sits where you want home (a knob at zero records no home position, and re-ticking later does not move it). A reset button itself sends no MIDI; it only arms the mode, and each armed knob springs back as you let go of it. Note: the Reset button is not offered in the current Objects panel; templates that already contain one keep working.
Friction
How long a spun control keeps gliding after you let go. 0 stops dead; higher values spin longer (at 100 the wheel essentially never stops on its own). Applies to jog wheels and to sliders that support flicking.

Slider style

Four looks, chosen with radio buttons:

Simple
A knob on a track. No coloured fill.
Bar
A knob plus a coloured bar filling from the bottom up. The most readable at a distance.
CrossF
The bar grows out from the centre in both directions: crossfaders and any bipolar control.
BarOnly
No knob at all: the whole bar is the touch area, so tapping anywhere jumps the value there. Fast and forgiving on a touchscreen.

Touch Enter deserves its own note. With it on, a finger already touching the screen can slide into a fader and pick it up, but only once it reaches the fader's current position, so the value never jumps. That is exactly how a DJ grabs a fader mid-move without a jolt. With it off, the fader responds only to touches that begin on it.

Encoder style

Four visual styles for endless wheels. The radio buttons here are labelled JogWheel (a circle with a dot), TurnWheel (concentric rings with an indicator line), TurnWheel2 (a second rings look) and Encoder (a classic star/gear knob). The Objects panel names the same four Jog Wheel, Dj Plate, 3 State Dj Plate and Endless Knob: same wheels, different wording. The style is purely visual; Touch Signaling is its own switch on the MIDI tab, which the 3 State Dj Plate preset simply arrives with already on.

VU meter options

The meter carries its own set: Needles (1 to 4), Peak Hold (holds the highest reading for 1.5 seconds before it fades), Dual VU Meter (a second arc for stereo), Tip Fixed Color (each needle tip a distinct colour so you can tell them apart), Needle Tip At Top (draws each tip at the needle's end instead of below the arc), and a family of Hide switches (Hide Needle, Hide Tip Needle, Hide Indicator Arc, Hide Tick Marks, Hide Scale Arc) for stripping the meter down to only the part you want.

Events: MIDI, hotkeys, OSC, HTTP, OBS and DAW

The Events panel is where a widget stops being a picture and starts doing something. It has a MIDI tab, a Hotkeys tab, an OSC tab, an HTTP tab, an OBS tab and a DAW tab. MIDI and Hotkeys have a per-widget On switch in the tab header; the OSC, HTTP and OBS tabs' On switches are masters for the whole application. The DAW tab needs no switch: pick an action or leave it on None.

How your software finds Zonea

Zonea appears to Windows as a MIDI device called Zonea-1. In your DAW's MIDI preferences you will see that name as both an input and an output:

  • Enable it as an input so your software hears Zonea's faders and buttons.
  • Enable it as an output too if you want the traffic to come back. That is what makes faders move and buttons light up on their own.

If you run several copies of Zonea on several screens: on the classic driver each copy takes the next name, Zonea-2, Zonea-3, and so on. On the Windows MIDI Services engine they all share the single Zonea port instead — it is multi-client, so your DAW still has just one port to configure and every copy receives its traffic (see MIDI Engine).

Zonea-1 is the name used by the classic MIDI driver, the engine Zonea uses by default on Intel/AMD machines (the ARM version always runs on Windows MIDI Services and its port is plain Zonea). If you switch the MIDI Engine to Windows MIDI Services (see Global settings), the port is called plain Zonea instead. One thing to know: the classic Zonea-1 entry deliberately stays visible in your DAW's port list after the switch (removing it live can freeze software that has it open), so make sure your software is pointed at the port that matches your engine.

MIDI OUT: what a widget sends

Channel
1 to 16. Think of it as which of sixteen conversations this widget speaks on.
Number
0 to 127. The CC or note number: the widget's actual address.
Value
0 to 127. What gets sent when the widget is activated.
Aft Val
The value sent when you let go. Usually 0, so a note stops or a light goes out.

Four switches change the nature of what is sent:

Notes (instead of CC)
Sends Note On/Off rather than Control Change. Use notes for drum pads and clip launching, CC for anything continuous. Encoders always send CC regardless.
Disable After Touch
Nothing is sent on release: the widget only speaks when touched.
Follow Host
The one to know about. For momentary (Push) buttons: the button sends and lights as you touch it, but the release is handed to your software: nothing is sent when you let go, and the light stays on until your DAW sends the Off value back. So the surface ends up showing what your DAW actually did, not what you hoped it did. No more buttons lit for tracks that never muted. (Switching a button to Toggle clears this option.)
Pitch Bend (14bits)
For sliders: pitch-bend messages with a 16,384-step scale instead of 128. Ordinary MIDI gives a fader 128 positions, which can sound stepped on a slow volume ride; this removes the stepping, if your software accepts it. (The slider produces as many distinct positions as it has pixels of travel, so the taller the fader on screen, the finer the ride.)

MIDI IN: what a widget listens to

The right-hand MIDI IN column sets what makes a widget move on its own. It appears for buttons (a Channel and Number to listen on, plus an On and Off value that decide which incoming values light it and which turn it off) and for the VU meter (Channel and Number only).

Faders and knobs have no MIDI IN column at all: they always listen on the same channel and number they send on, which is what you want almost every time.

Buttons are different and this catches people out: a button with empty MIDI IN fields listens to nothing at all. There is no fallback. It must be given an IN channel and number before your software can light it. To help, typing an OUT channel and number on a button copies them across to the IN side automatically.

Buttons also get a per-widget master switch with four positions: MIDI ON, MIDI OUT OFF (listens only), MIDI IN OFF (sends only), and MIDI OFF. On every other widget only MIDI ON and MIDI OFF apply; the partial positions have no effect there.

What incoming MIDI can and cannot do

MIDI from your software moves widgets and changes how they look; it does not press them. In particular, a message from your DAW will never fire a button's keyboard hotkey or macro; those happen only when a human touches the surface. A button's OSC, HTTP and OBS actions are the exception: they follow the button's state, so incoming MIDI that flips the button does fire them.

MIDI learn without leaving your seat

The reliable routine: put your software into its learn mode, hold Shift + X so Zonea's widgets go live, and move the control. Release Shift+X and carry on editing.

Widgets that use two addresses at once get dedicated help, because you cannot easily move only one axis by hand: the XY Pad, and any wheel with Touch Signaling on (the 3 State DJ Platter preset comes that way). Their panel offers Send CC and Send CC+1 buttons that fire each address on demand, one at a time, so your software can learn them separately.

Connecting real MIDI hardware

Zonea can also talk to physical MIDI gear. Under Hardware MIDI Devices there are two lists, Inputs and Outputs, with a Refresh button each. Tick a device to connect it (up to 8 inputs and 8 outputs at a time); the choice is remembered and reconnects next time you start.

Widgets respond to every connected input at once; there is no per-widget device routing. Note that SysEx messages coming from hardware are ignored on every version of Zonea: ordinary notes and CCs work in both directions, but a controller that relies on SysEx to talk back will appear to do nothing. Note that these hardware choices are saved with Zonea's settings, not inside the template, so a template moved to another computer will not bring them along.

Hotkeys: buttons that press keys

Any button can type keystrokes into whatever program has focus, which lets Zonea drive software that has no MIDI at all. Open Events › Hotkeys with a button selected.

Switch it on

Hotkeys are off by default. Assign a key, test it, get nothing: this is almost always why. Tick the On checkbox in the Hotkeys tab.

  1. Select your button and open the Hotkeys tab.
  2. Press Set. The box turns orange and reads Press a key...
  3. Press the key or combination you want. Modifiers are supported: Ctrl + Shift + F1 records as one hotkey.
  4. Tick On.

Clear removes it again.

The three modes

Tap
A single press and release. The default, and right for most things.
Hold
The key stays held down for as long as your finger is on the button: for push-to-talk, or any "while held" function. Offered on momentary (Push) buttons only.
Macro
A whole sequence of keystrokes with pauses between them.

In Tap mode on a momentary button you can also choose the Trigger: TouchDown (fires as you press, the default and the responsive choice) or TouchUp (fires when your finger leaves the button, whether you lift it or slide it off).

On a toggle button, the hotkey fires when it turns on and sends nothing when it turns off.

Building a macro

Choose Macro and the MACRO SEQUENCE editor appears: a list of steps you assemble:

+ Hotkey
Adds a keystroke. Click it, then press the key.
+ Delay
Adds a pause, using the length in the Delay (ms) box. 100 is a tenth of a second, 1000 is a full second.
Remove
Deletes the selected step.
Up / Down
Moves the selected step earlier or later in the sequence.

Double-click a step to change it. Double-click a keystroke and press a new key to swap it; double-click a delay and its value loads into the Delay box, where you edit it and then either press Enter or click + Delay to commit.

A finished macro reads like a sentence: Ctrl+C › 200ms › Ctrl+V › Enter.

Give slow software time to keep up

Macros fire far faster than a human types, and some programs drop keystrokes that arrive too quickly, especially when a menu or dialog has to open in between. If a macro works sometimes and not others, put a delay of 100–200 ms between the steps. It is nearly always the fix.

Which keys can be used

Function keys F1–F24, letters A–Z, the number row 0–9, Space, Enter, Tab, Escape, Backspace, Delete, Insert, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, the arrow keys, common punctuation, and Ctrl, Shift, Alt and Win as modifiers.

Keys that will not work

The numeric keypad, Caps/Num/Scroll Lock, Print Screen, Pause/Break, media keys and the Menu key cannot be used. If you record one, the button will simply do nothing when pressed: no error, no warning. If a hotkey is mysteriously silent, check it is not one of these.

F13 to F24 are the smart choice for controlling software: no keyboard has them, so nothing else on your system will ever fight you for them.

OSC: control over the network

Alongside MIDI, Zonea speaks OSC (Open Sound Control), the network protocol used by Reaper, Resolume, TouchOSC, QLab, Max/MSP, Behringer's X32 family and many more. Where MIDI is a cable with 128 steps, OSC is your network with full floating-point precision. Zonea sends the true continuous position of a fader, not 128 approximations of it.

Everything lives in the OSC tab of the Events panel, in two halves: Connection (shared by the whole app) and Widget (the selected widget's settings).

Connection

On
The checkbox in the tab header. It opens the connection: Zonea starts listening and sending. The installer already told Windows Firewall about Zonea, so no permission prompt appears.
Receive Port
Where Zonea listens for incoming OSC. Default 9000, the port most OSC software sends to out of the box.
Send to
A list of destinations. Each entry is an IP address and port (127.0.0.1:8000 is this computer); use the machine's IP, not its network name. Add as many as you like: every message goes to all of them. Select one and press Remove to drop it.

Making a widget speak OSC

Select the widget and press Auto next to the Address field: Zonea invents a unique address like /zonea/fader1. That is all: the widget now sends its value there and follows what arrives on the same address, each direction as far as the widget supports it; the per-widget table below marks which way each one speaks. Clear the address to switch the widget's OSC off.

Address
The widget's name on the network, always starting with /. Incoming messages may use OSC wildcards: something sent to /zonea/fader* moves every fader whose address matches.
Range
The values sent at the widget's minimum and maximum. The default 0 to 1 suits most software; use 0 to 127 for MIDI-style receivers, -1 to 1 for pans, anything you need.
Type
Float (default, works almost everywhere), Integer (whole numbers, for mixers and DMX-style gear), or Boolean (true/false, on when the value passes the middle of the Range).
Arguments
For receivers that want more than one value in the message. Leave empty to send just the value. Otherwise write a list: $v is the widget's value, plain numbers and "quoted text" are sent as constants. 3 $v sends channel 3 plus the value; $v "go" sends the value and the word go. On the XY pad, $x and $y are the two axes.

What each widget does over OSC

Slider, Knob
Send their continuous position; move when a value arrives.
XY Pad
Sends one message with two values (x, y).
Button
Sends the Range's maximum when it turns on, the minimum when it turns off, and follows incoming values the same way.
Encoder
Follows its Mode (shown in both the MIDI and OSC tabs, always in sync): absolute modes send the position, relative modes send increments. With Integer type and Range 0 to 127 you get classic ±1 ticks. With Touch Signaling on, touching and releasing also sends address/touch.
VU Meter
Receive-only. Its address feeds the first arc (and the needle in one-needle mode); in multi-needle mode add /arc2 or /needle1/needle4 to the address to feed the rest.
OSC Label
A new widget in Displays: a text display that shows whatever text or number arrives at its address: send it /zonea/text1 "Hello" from Max, QLab or any OSC app. Multi-line, skinnable, and styled like any label.

HTTP: buttons that call a web API

The HTTP tab lets any button fire a web request, which turns Zonea into a control surface for software that speaks HTTP rather than MIDI. The showcase is vMix: its entire function list (Cut, Fade, overlays, Start/StopRecording, streaming, PTZ…) is reachable through simple web addresses, and a Zonea button can call any of them. The same mechanism drives Companion, webhooks, or anything with a web API.

On (tab header)
The master HTTP switch for the whole application: nothing is sent while it is off. Your buttons' URLs stay saved either way.
URL On
The request fired when the button turns on (or is pressed, on a momentary button). For vMix: http://127.0.0.1:8088/api/?Function=StartRecording.
URL Off
The request fired when it turns off (or is released). Leave either field empty to send nothing on that transition.

For vMix the address shape is always the same, http://127.0.0.1:8088/api/?Function=NAME&Input=1, and any function from its Shortcuts reference works. Beyond vMix: trigger Companion buttons, fire home-automation webhooks (lights down when the show starts), poke OBS through a web-API plugin, or call anything on your network that answers a web request.

A status line under the fields reports the last request, OK or the error, so a wrong address never fails silently. And the division of labour with vMix is natural: vMix also accepts MIDI natively, so map Zonea's faders to volumes and the T-bar over MIDI, and use HTTP buttons for the functions MIDI mapping does not reach.

OBS Studio: scenes, recording and volumes with live feedback

The OBS tab connects Zonea to OBS Studio through the WebSocket server built into OBS itself (OBS 28 and up; enable it once under Tools → WebSocket Server Settings). This is a two-way link: Zonea drives OBS, and OBS drives your widgets back.

  • Buttons switch to a scene, start/stop recording, streaming or the virtual camera, mute an audio input, or save the replay buffer. And they always show OBS's real state: the record button lights while recording, however the recording was started, and the button of the active scene lights up, so a row of scene buttons behaves like a radio group on its own.
  • Sliders and knobs ride an audio input's volume, in both directions: move the fader and OBS follows; change the volume in OBS and the fader moves. OBS has no MIDI of its own, so this is the touch fader it never had.

Setting a widget up is two dropdowns, no typing: pick the Action, then pick the Target from a list of your actual scenes and inputs, read live from OBS (⟳ rescans; the lists update by themselves when you add or rename things in OBS). Enter the connection once (host, port 4455, and the password OBS shows in its WebSocket dialog), turn on the tab's On checkbox, and the status line confirms the link. If OBS closes and reopens, Zonea reconnects by itself.

One caveat worth knowing: widgets remember scenes and inputs by name, so if you rename a scene in OBS afterwards, re-pick it in the widget's Target list.

The Clip Grid with Ableton Live

The Clip Grid widget (in DAW Perform) puts a Launchpad-style clip grid on your surface, and it speaks to Ableton Live and Bitwig Studio through the Zonea script for your DAW, both shipped with Zonea. The script is what makes it tick: the grid does not use ordinary MIDI mapping at all, and does nothing until the script is in place. With it, every cell shows the actual colour and name of the clip, updates the moment clips play, record or stop, and the DAW draws its session frame around exactly the area your grid controls, so you always know where you are.

Setting it up for Live takes a minute, once:

  • The installer has already placed the script in Documents\Ableton\User Library\Remote Scripts\Zonea_Live. If Live was running during the install, restart it so it notices. (If you have moved your User Library somewhere else, copy the Zonea_Live folder into your User Library's Remote Scripts folder yourself: the installer leaves a copy of both DAW scripts in Documents\Zonea\DAW Scripts, with a README that says exactly where each one goes.)
  • In Live, open Preferences → Link / Tempo / MIDI and pick Zonea Live in a free Control Surface slot. Set its Input and Output to Zonea's MIDI port.
  • That is all. Place a Clip Grid, set its columns and rows, and the colours and names arrive on their own.

The grid always starts at the top-left of your set, so the first cell is track 1, scene 1 (the Ring Left / Right / Up / Down buttons from the DAW tab move that window, and the grid remembers where it was left). Use one Clip Grid per template: the DAW feeds a single region at a time, so a second grid would show the wrong clips. If you need to cover more of the session, make the one grid bigger instead.

The grid can also carry the track's mixer controls, in either DAW. Tick Track Buttons in the inspector for a header row that shows each column's track name and selects that track in the DAW when you tap it (the selected track is highlighted, and a Device Panel on your surface jumps to that track's devices). With Scene Buttons also on, the header's corner becomes a Main button that selects the Main (master) track — the quick way to put the Device Panel on your master chain. Tick Mute Row or Solo Row for rows of M and S buttons below the clips, one per track, each lit with the track's real state. Solo Is Cue relabels the Solo row as "C" for cue (headphone pre-listen): in both DAWs the track button is the same one, and whether Solo acts as cue is a DAW-wide switch (in Live the Master's Solo/Cue button, in Bitwig the Solo as Cue option) that the DAW does not report to controllers, so set this label to match how your DAW is configured.

Around the clips the grid carries the full session-controller layout: the ▶ scene buttons on the right fire an entire row at once (and show the scene's name whenever it has one), the ■ stop row at the bottom stops whatever is playing on each track (even a clip outside the visible grid), and the corner button stops all clips. The ▶/■ symbols take the editor's Color 1 / Color 2 (white by default), and two inspector fields, Clip Dim and Empty Dim, set how bright stopped clips and empty cells are drawn. And the grid is playable like an instrument: drag a finger across it and each cell it enters fires in turn, clips and scenes alike. Stop buttons deliberately ignore the sweep: they only respond to a direct tap, so a run across the grid can never silence a track by accident.

The Clip Grid with Bitwig Studio

The same grid, colours, names, scenes, stops and glissando work with Bitwig Studio through the bundled Zonea Bitwig controller script. Setup, once:

  • The installer has already placed the script inside Documents\Bitwig Studio\Controller Scripts. If Bitwig was running during the install, restart it so it notices. (If your My Controller Scripts location is somewhere else, copy the script's folder into it yourself from Documents\Zonea\DAW Scripts; the README there says exactly where each one goes.)
  • In Bitwig, open the Dashboard, then Settings → Controllers → Add Controller, choose vendor Zonea and the Zonea Bitwig script, and set both its Input and Output to Zonea's MIDI port.
  • Done. Bitwig highlights in its clip launcher exactly the area your grid shows.

Two Bitwig-specific things worth knowing. First, when you change the grid's Columns or Rows, the script restarts itself for about a second to resize that highlight; this is normal and only happens when the size changes. Second, orientation: the grid uses the standard session-controller layout (tracks as columns, scenes as rows), which matches Bitwig's Mix view. Bitwig's Arrange view draws its clip launcher rotated, tracks as rows; if you prefer your grid to match that view, tick Flip in the grid's inspector and the whole grid transposes, scene buttons moving to the bottom row and stops to the right column. Flip is purely visual: the clips stay mapped to the same tracks and scenes.

DAW: transport, mixer and grid navigation

The DAW tab of the Events panel turns ordinary widgets into session controls for Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio. It rides the same Zonea script as the Clip Grid, so there is no MIDI mapping to do: pick what the widget does from a dropdown and it just works, with live feedback from the DAW.

  • Buttons get an Action: Ring Left / Right / Up / Down move the Clip Grid's viewport (and the highlight frame follows in the DAW); Play, Stop, Record (session), Metronome, Overdub, Tap Tempo, Tempo +1 / -1, Undo, Redo drive the transport; the Quantize actions set the launch quantization (None to 1/16), and the button holding the active value lights up, so a row of them behaves like a radio group; Mute / Solo / Arm / Select Track act on a track of the grid's ring, chosen with the Track field (1 to 16, counted from the ring's left edge, so it follows the ring as it moves).
  • Buttons follow the DAW's real state: Play lights while the DAW plays, Record while it session-records, Metronome and Overdub while they are on, Mute/Solo/Arm with the track's actual switches, however they were changed.
  • Sliders and knobs get a Control (Volume, Pan, Send 1 or Send 2) and a Target: a ring track (1 to 16), the currently Selected track (volume and pan), or the Master volume. The link is bidirectional at high resolution: move the fader and the DAW follows; move it in the DAW and the fader follows, and your finger always wins while it is on the widget.

In Bitwig, Record (session) is the clip-launcher overdub toggle and Overdub is the arranger overdub, the closest equivalents of Live's session record and arrangement overdub. One tip: if you give a widget a DAW role, do not also MIDI-map that widget to the same function in the DAW, or every touch will act twice. Its MIDI stays free for anything else.

Device Panel: hands on the selected device

The Device Panel widget (in DAW Perform) is the "screen plus eight knobs" strip of a hardware controller, in a single widget. It always controls the currently selected device in Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio: click a synth or an effect in the DAW — or tap a track name, or the Main button, on a Clip Grid — and the eight knobs jump to it by themselves. It rides the same bundled Zonea script as the Clip Grid, so there is nothing to map, ever.

  • The header shows the device's name with ‹ › buttons to step to the previous or next device on the track, and a page indicator ("2/5") with its own ‹ › buttons to move through the parameters in banks of eight. In Live these are the device's parameters taken eight at a time; in Bitwig they are the native Remote Controls pages you define per plug-in.
  • Each parameter's real name and its value as the DAW formats it ("-12.5 dB", "3.2 kHz") sit above the knob, so your fingers never cover them while turning; the knob's centre shows its position as 0–100% (% In Knob, on by default).
  • The knobs read absolute (the arc shows the parameter's true position) but are turned relative, in a circle like Zonea's other knobs: the value moves from wherever it is and never jumps, the safe behaviour when the DAW changes values underneath. The link is bidirectional at high resolution, and multitouch: turn several parameters at once. Double-tap a knob and the DAW returns that parameter to its default value — in either DAW.
  • In Ableton Live the panel also knows what kind of parameter each one is: an on/off switch appears as a button that lights while it is on, and a stepped selector of up to 16 positions draws division marks across its arc (Step Marks), so you can see at a glance that it clicks between fixed values. Bitwig does not report which parameters are switches, so there every parameter stays a knob.
  • Layout and looks: Rows lays the eight knobs out as one row of eight or two rows of four (new panels start as two rows, a squarer shape); Classic Knobs and Classic Buttons draw them in the same style as Zonea's Knob widget, with Stroke setting the ring thickness; Font and Bold pick the typeface for its texts (the device name stays bold regardless). Color 1 sets the value arcs, Color 2 the rings and texts. A column with no parameter behind it simply dims.

A classic DAW mixer with MCU (Mackie Control)

Besides the Zonea scripts there is a second, older road into your DAW: Mackie Control (MCU), the hardware-controller protocol that nearly every DAW has spoken for twenty years. Tell your DAW that a Mackie Control is connected on the Zonea port and you can build a complete bank mixer — motorised faders, pan pots, transport, and displays that label themselves — with no MIDI mapping and no script. Where the Zonea script covers Ableton Live and Bitwig Studio, MCU covers practically everything else: look for a "Mackie Control" or "MCU" option in your DAW's control-surface or remote settings.

Set the DAW up once: add Mackie Control as a control surface with both its Input and Output on Zonea's MIDI port. Then build the surface from these pieces — the numbers are the MCU standard, so the same template works in any DAW that speaks it:

Faders (strips 1–8)
One Slider per strip with Pitch Bend (14bits) ticked in its MIDI tab — MCU faders use 14-bit pitch bend, so you get the full resolution. Channel = the strip number (1 to 8), and channel 9 is the master fader. They are motorised for free: the DAW sends fader positions back and the sliders move by themselves.
Pan / V-Pots
One Encoder per strip: Mode Relative (Signed Bit), channel 1, Number 16 for strip 1 up to 23 for strip 8. The V-Pot push functions live on notes 32–39 if you want a button under each knob.
Strip buttons
Buttons with Notes ticked and Push on (MCU buttons are momentary; the DAW keeps the state), channel 1, Value 127, Aft Val 0. Note numbers: Rec/Arm 0–7, Solo 8–15, Mute 16–23, Select 24–31. Then give each button the same channel and number on its MIDI IN, with On = 127 and Off = 0: the DAW now lights it exactly like a hardware LED, whatever changed the state.
Transport
Buttons on notes 91 Rewind, 92 Forward, 93 Stop, 94 Play, 95 Record — the Play, Stop and Record button flavours in the Buttons category exist for exactly this. Same MIDI IN trick for the LEDs, so Play stays lit while the DAW plays.
Banking
Buttons on notes 46 / 47 shift the whole surface eight tracks left or right; 48 / 49 move it one track at a time. The scribble strips re-label themselves as you bank.
Jog wheel
An Encoder with the Jog Wheel look: Relative (Signed Bit), channel 1, Number 60. Spin to scrub the project.
Scribble strips
One MCU display (in Displays) above each fader, each set to its strip number (1–8): track names and values arrive from the DAW on their own. Its MCU XT mode reads a Mackie extender instead, for DAWs driving one.

Two tips. First, build one strip completely — fader, pan, four buttons, display — then copy and paste it seven times and only change the channel and note numbers; it is minutes, not hours. Second, MCU and the Zonea script speak different languages on the same port, so in Live or Bitwig a template can carry both at once — a Clip Grid and Device Panel over the script, plus an MCU fader bank — with the two control surfaces configured side by side on the Zonea port.

Pages and navigation

Every template has 144 pages. Think of them as a very wide strip of surfaces you slide between: mixing on one, effects on the next, a page per deck, a page for lighting. They cost nothing until you use them.

The editor's title bar always tells you where you are, and the Adv. UI / Pages panel has the full grid of 144 buttons; the current page is drawn in yellow. Click any page to go there and build on it.

Buttons that change pages

Any button becomes a navigation button by giving it a Page target in Properties:

None
An ordinary button. It does not navigate.
Page 1–144
Goes to that page.
Hide
Hides Zonea to reveal the desktop. The blinking arrow brings it back.
Quit
Returns to the main screen.

A button with a page target fires the moment you touch it — navigation should feel instant, not wait for you to lift your finger. Zonea also sets such a button to momentary (Push) when the template is saved and reloaded; tick Push yourself if you want it to look momentary straight away.

Dim on Page: knowing where you are

Dim on Page, on by default, draws a navigation button at half brightness when you are already on the page it points to. Build a row of page buttons and the current page dims itself. It is a small thing that saves you looking twice mid-performance.

Page animations

Each navigation button can play an animation as the new page arrives: Explode, Spiral, Cascade, Zoom In, Random Sides, Drop Down, Rise Up, Slide Right, Slide Left, Wave, Hurricane, or None.

Anim ms sets the length, from 200 to 2000 milliseconds, default 500. Longer looks more dramatic and takes longer before you can play again; taps during an animation are ignored so navigations cannot stack up. For live work, 200–300 ms or None keeps the surface feeling immediate.

The five-finger gesture

In the Skins panel, 5-Finger Touch chooses what happens when you place five fingers flat on the screen: go to a page, Hide Zonea, or Quit to the main screen. An escape hatch that needs no button and cannot be hit by accident.

It only works with a live video background

The five-finger gesture is only active while the template's live video background (NDI, OMT or Spout) is connected. That background is one connection shared by the whole template, so with it running the gesture works on every page, and without it five fingers do nothing anywhere, no matter what you have chosen here. Nothing in the interface tells you this, so if the gesture seems broken, this is why.

Sharing a widget across pages: the Super UI commands

A transport bar you need everywhere should not be built 144 times. The Menu › Super UI commands solve this, and the difference between them matters:

Float
The widget appears on every page. It is not copied; it is the same widget everywhere, so changing it once changes it everywhere. For master volume, transport, or a home button.
Float To
Shares the widget with one chosen page, locked to the same position on both. Select the widget, click Float To, then click the target page in the grid.
Any Position
Like Float To, but the widget can sit somewhere different on the target page: the same fader on the left of one page and the right of another.
Unfloat
Ends the sharing. The widget goes back to living only on the page it was created on.
Unfloat From
Removes it from the page you are on, leaving the rest untouched.

Copy To, which lives in the Edit section of the Menu column, not with the Super UI commands, is the opposite of sharing: it makes an independent copy on another page. Change one and the other does not follow. Use it when you want a similar control with different MIDI.

The rule of thumb: Float when it is the same control; Copy To when it merely looks the same.

Skins: using your own artwork

Most widgets can wear your own image instead of Zonea's built-in graphics — buttons, sliders, knobs, encoders, pads, meters, labels, displays and the decorations. (The Clip Grid, Device Panel, keyboards, containers and the video widgets draw themselves and take no images.) A surface can end up looking like a photograph of vintage hardware, or like nothing anyone has seen before. Zonea takes PNG and GIF files. Animated GIFs play on the Image decoration; every other widget uses the first frame as a still.

The image library

Open Skins. At the top is your Image Library, the pool of images this template can use. + Load Images adds files from your computer (several at once), and Remove Selected takes them out again.

Images live inside the template, so a template you copy to another machine or send to a friend arrives with its artwork intact. Nothing to collect, nothing to relink.

Assigning an image: the two-click rule

Assignment always works the same way, and it is worth learning once:

  1. Select the widget on the canvas. (The Page Background slot is the exception: it needs no selection.)
  2. Click the slot you want to fill. Its border turns yellow: that slot is now armed.
  3. Click an image in the library. It goes into the armed slot.

Click the armed slot again to disarm it. Each slot has a Clear button to empty it.

The three slots

Background
The widget's base image. On a button this is its normal, unpressed look.
Overlay
The second layer, and what it means depends on the widget: a button's pressed image, a knob's rotating pointer, a fader's knob, a meter's glass. This is what makes skinned widgets animate properly instead of sitting there as flat pictures.
Page Background
Artwork for the whole page rather than a widget. Pick the page number, then the image. Apply to All puts it on all 144 pages; Clear All removes them.

Two widgets are partial: encoders only take the overlay (the spinning part), and the Image decoration only takes a background.

Skinning several widgets at once

You can select many widgets and skin them together, provided they are the same type and the same size. If they are not, Zonea refuses and tells you in red: "For multiple, select same type and size". The panel always names what you have selected, "Buttons (8) 100x60 px", so you can see at a glance whether the selection is uniform.

Draw your artwork at the size the widget will be

Images fill the widget completely (nothing preserves the aspect ratio for you), so a picture drawn for a wide button will stretch if you use it on a tall one. Note the size shown in the Skins panel and make your images to match. For round widgets (knobs, encoders, XY pads) that means square images, or the circle stretches into an ellipse.

Live video as a page background

A page background does not have to be a still image. The Skins panel can put a live video feed behind your controls, from OMT or NDI (over the network) or Spout (from another program on the same computer). Pick a source from the dropdown, use to rescan, and leave Auto Connect ticked (it comes that way) so it reconnects by itself whenever the template loads. There is one video background per template: connecting a source replaces the previous one, and it shows behind every page, unlike still page backgrounds, which are per page.

OMT offers Low, Medium and High quality; NDI offers Low and High; Spout has no quality setting. Lower quality uses less of your processor, worth choosing when the machine is also running your DAW.

Advanced UI: bringing other programs into your surface

This is the part of Zonea that has no equivalent on a hardware controller. Instead of a controller sitting next to your software, the software can be built into the controller.

External UI Display: a live piece of another program

Capture any rectangle of any application window (a waveform, a mixer strip, a track list, a plugin's display) and it appears as a widget on your surface, live and updating in real time. Your controls can then be arranged around it.

  1. Open Adv. UI / Pages and click External UI Display.
  2. A red selection rectangle appears over the screen. Move and resize it to frame exactly the region you want.
  3. Double-click (or double-tap) inside the rectangle to confirm, or press Enter. Escape cancels.
  4. The widget appears on the canvas. Move and resize it like anything else.

Re-Map points an existing widget at a different region, useful after you have moved the source application around.

Magnifier helps when the thing you want is small. It is on by default: during selection, Shift + arrow keys zoom in on the selection rectangle (up to 200%) while nudging its edge one pixel at a time; Ctrl + Shift + arrows pulls it back the other way. Moving the mouse returns you to the normal view, and the Magnifier button switches the feature off if you prefer to work unzoomed.

The source program must be running and not minimised. Some windows are protected against being captured (most video streaming apps are) and those will show nothing.

Holes: seeing straight through the surface

A Circular Hole or Rectangle Hole is a genuinely transparent opening in your surface. In Performance mode you see the application underneath through it and you can touch it directly. In Edit mode the hole shows a faint outline so you can grab and position it.

The Transparency command in the Menu column does the same thing to the whole canvas at once, rather than one region.

Handle Window: the application arrives where you want it

Each page can take charge of an external program's window. Navigate to that page and the window is un-minimised, moved and resized to exactly the position you saved, and brought to the front.

  1. Open the application you want to place, and put its window where you want it first: its position and size are captured at the moment you assign it.
  2. Go to the page that should control it.
  3. Click Handle Window. Zonea steps aside and a small crosshair appears: drag it onto the application's window and let go. That window, at that position and size, is now saved with the page.

Moving the window by hand afterwards is not re-captured: to adjust, use the Position Handle arrows, or assign it again. And the button is a toggle: clicking Handle Window on a page that already has one removes it (the button then reads Unhandle Window).

Copy Handle gives another page the same assignment. Position Handle brings up arrow buttons that nudge the window one pixel at a time, which is what you need when you are lining a hole up precisely with a waveform.

Where this all comes together

The three features are designed to be used as one. Handle Window puts your software in a known position, a Hole or an External UI Display exposes the part of it you need to see, and your widgets surround it. The result is a single custom interface for software that never shipped one: a different one on each of 144 pages if you want.

Window handles do not travel well

A handle remembers a program and an exact rectangle on this computer's screen. Copy the template to a machine with a different screen size or without that program installed, and the handle will not find its target. Expect to set handles again on each machine.

Widget reference

Everything you can place, what it is for, and what it sends. The Objects panel sorts them into Buttons, Sliders, Knobs, Pads, Encoders, DAW Perform, Decoration, Meters, Displays, Video Mon and Tools & More; the groupings below cover the same widgets, with a few combined or re-ordered for readability.

Buttons

Button

The workhorse. The Objects panel offers it in eight flavours (Labelled, Play, FF / RWD, Pause, Record, Stop, Arrow and List), but they are the same button with a different icon already applied. Anything one of them can do, all of them can do.

  • Toggle or momentary, set by the Push checkbox.
  • Sends CC, or notes if you tick Notes. Sends the Aft Val on release.
  • Receives, with its own independent listening address, so it can be lit by your software.
  • Can change page, fire a keyboard hotkey or macro, call a web API over HTTP (vMix and friends), drive OBS Studio (scenes, recording, mute, with live state feedback), drive your DAW (transport, quantize, Mute/Solo/Arm, grid navigation; see the DAW tab), join a radio group, blink when on, and be triggered by sliding a finger across it.

Sliders and faders

Slider

Linear faders, offered in three groups that differ in one important way:

  • Bar Sliders: placed in BarOnly style. No knob, the whole bar is the touch area. Choose the one that starts at 0%, 50% or 100%.
  • Standard Sliders: a knob plus a coloured bar (the Bar style), again starting at 0%, 50% or 100%. For a bare knob-on-a-track look, switch one to the Simple style afterwards.
  • Cross Fader: horizontal and starting at centre, with the bar growing out from the middle in both directions so you can see how far off centre you are at a glance.

All three groups are the same widget and any of them can be switched to any style afterwards; they are simply shortcuts to a common starting point. Sliders reload at the position they were in when the template was saved.

Four visual styles (Simple, Bar, CrossF, BarOnly), optional Touch Enter for catching a fader mid-slide, and optional 14-bit high-resolution output. Faders move on their own when your software sends feedback, including OBS Studio input volumes over the OBS tab.

Knobs and encoders

Knob

A rotary control with a value arc and a label. Drag to turn. Placed from six presets that differ only in starting position: Kn 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and Auto Reset.

Auto Reset is a centre-detented pan pot that springs back to the middle when you let go, exactly how a pan control should behave. Any knob can be given the same centre-out look with Pan/Split.

Knobs keep their proportions, so they stay round.

Encoder

An endless wheel with no start or end. Spin it with a finger and it keeps spinning, slowing according to its Friction setting. Four looks: Jog Wheel, Dj Plate, 3 State Dj Plate, Endless Knob.

Encoders send only: they do not move from software feedback, because an endless wheel has no position to move to.

Encoder Mode is the setting that matters, because different programs expect different dialects of "the wheel moved a bit":

Absolute
Plain 0–127 following the wheel's angle.
Absolute (14bit)
High resolution, 0–16383, across two CC numbers.
Relative (Signed Bit)
Relative (Signed Bit 2)
Relative (BinOffset)
Relative (2's Comp.)
Four ways of saying "turned this far, this direction". Your software's documentation will name which one it wants. If the wrong one is chosen, the control usually jumps or moves backwards. Try another.

Sensitivity is degrees of rotation per MIDI step; lower is more sensitive. Touch Signaling (used by the 3 State Dj Plate) additionally sends a signal when you touch the wheel and another when you let go, which is what DJ software needs for scratching and jog-touch. It uses two consecutive numbers, so stay at 126 or below.

DAW Perform

Clip Grid

A whole DAW clip grid in a single widget, Launchpad-style, for Ableton Live and Bitwig Studio. Choose how many columns and rows it has, then tap a cell to launch its clip, or slide a finger across the grid and every cell it enters fires. A ▶ column on the right launches whole scenes, a ■ row stops each track (and when the scene column is also shown, its corner button stops everything); both are on by default and can be hidden in the inspector, Stops On Top moves that ■ row above the grid, and Flip transposes the whole grid (tracks as rows, matching Bitwig's Arrange view). A Track Buttons row shows each column's track name and selects it in the DAW when tapped — with Scene Buttons also on, its corner is a Main button that selects the Main (master) track; optional Mute and Solo rows toggle each track with live state (Solo Is Cue relabels Solo as "C" for the DAW's cue mode); and the scene column can sit on the left instead of the right, matching Bitwig. Cell spacing, clip names and the dimming of stopped and empty cells are all adjustable.

The grid works through the bundled Zonea Live or Zonea Bitwig script (see the Ableton Live setup or the Bitwig Studio setup, two minutes each); without the script in place the grid stays silent. With it, each cell takes the real colour and name of the clip, updating live as clips play, record or stop. It replaces the old single clip button (a 1×1 grid does that job, with colours and names).

Device Panel

Eight knobs that always control the selected device in Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio: a header with the device's name, previous/next device and parameter-page buttons, and each parameter's real name and DAW-formatted value above its knob, with the knob's position shown as 0–100% in its centre. One row of eight or two rows of four, classic-knob or flat looks; in Live, on/off parameters appear as buttons and stepped selectors draw division marks on the arc. Double-tap a knob to return that parameter to its default. Needs the bundled Zonea script for your DAW; no MIDI mapping. See Device Panel.

Pads

Halo Pad

sends onlyskinnable

An XY pad. Drag anywhere on the square and it sends two values at once: horizontal on your chosen number, vertical on the next number up. Filter cutoff and resonance under one finger.

Because it always uses two consecutive numbers, keep its number at 126 or below. Nothing stops you typing 127, but the second axis then has nowhere to go and will misbehave. The Send CC / Send CC+1 buttons make mapping each axis painless.

Meters and displays

Hybrid VU

receives onlyskinnable

An analogue-style VU meter with a swinging needle and a level arc, driven by your software over MIDI or OSC. It only receives: it never sends. One to four needles, optional peak hold, a second arc for stereo, and switches to hide almost every element for a minimal look.

Read this before mapping a VU meter

Which numbers it listens to depends on the needle count.

With one needle, the meter listens on exactly the number you set: arc and needle share it, like any other widget.

With two to four needles, it spreads out from your number: your number drives the first arc, +1 the second arc, +2 the first needle and +3 the second. A third needle adds +4 and a fourth adds +5. Those two only exist if you have asked for that many needles.

Older versions had a one-needle quirk where the meter listened on your number plus one; if a meter you built back then stops moving after updating, raise its number by 1.

MCU

receives onlyskinnable

An LCD-style text display that shows track names and parameter values from your DAW, using the Mackie Control protocol that nearly every DAW speaks.

Choose MCU / MCU Pro for channels 1–8, or MCU XT (Extender) for further banks, then pick which strip (1–8) this display mirrors. Set your DAW to talk Mackie Control on the Zonea port and the text appears by itself. Place eight of them above eight faders and you have a mixer that labels itself — the full recipe, faders and buttons included, is in the MCU mixer guide.

OSC Label

receives onlyskinnable

A text display driven over the network: it shows whatever text or number arrives at its OSC address: song names from your DAW, cue text from QLab, anything Max can send. No MIDI at all; give it an Address in the Events › OSC tab and send it /zonea/text1 "Hello". Multi-line with word wrap, and styled like any label.

Clock

no MIDIskinnable

The current time. No MIDI, no configuration beyond appearance. More useful than it sounds when the surface is covering your whole screen and the taskbar is hidden.

Decoration

Purely visual: none of these send or receive anything. They are what turns a grid of controls into a designed instrument: grouping related controls, labelling sections, separating banks.

Border
An outlined rectangle. Colour, thickness and corner radius adjustable.
Color Shape
A filled shape with separate fill and border colours.
Black Shape
A solid black panel. Its colour cannot be changed, only opacity, corner radius, angle and size, though it does accept a skin image. (A colour swatch does appear for it in Properties, but it has no effect. Use Color Shape if you want a colour.)
Line
A divider rule. Colour, thickness and angle.
Label
Standalone text: section titles and instructions.
Image
A picture: your logo, a decorative panel, or artwork. This is the one that plays animated GIFs. Background image only, no overlay.

Tools & More

Keyboard
An on-screen touch keyboard for typing into other programs: searching a music library without reaching for a real keyboard. Its Search key can also send a MIDI signal you can map.
Container
A collapsible folder for other widgets. Touch to expand, touch to fold. Containers can be nested.
Traktor Wave Ribbon
A transparent touch overlay to place over Traktor's waveform strip, fixing touch behaviour there. Needs Handle Window set up for the Traktor window.

Video

These display live video on the surface. None of them send or receive MIDI, and none take skins. All keep their proportions.

NDI
Video over your network: from OBS, vMix, Resolume, an NDI camera, or another computer. The sender must be running, NDI-enabled and on the same network.
OMT
Network video using the newer Open Media Transport standard. This is the one that also works on ARM machines.
Spout
Video from another program on the same computer, passed card-to-card without touching the network. For VJ software, TouchDesigner, Resolume.
External UI Display
A live region of another application's window. Created from Adv. UI / Pages rather than the parts bin. See Advanced UI.
Mac Bridge
A live, touchable region of a Mac's screen on your network: what you see is the Mac, and your taps go back to it. It needs the companion Bridge app running on the Mac, and it has its own Mac Bridge entry in the editor's right-hand column rather than the Video Mon panel.

These are not placed from the ordinary parts bin. In the Objects column choose Video Mon, which opens a panel with a section for each of OMT, NDI and Spout. In each section you pick a Source from the list ( rescans), press Start to bring the feed up, and click the thumbnail to place the widget on the canvas.

Each also offers Auto Connect (on by default, so the feed returns whenever the template loads), Show Info Overlay for resolution and frame rate. Quality is offered on OMT (Low, Medium, High) and NDI (Low, High); Spout has none. Lower quality means less load on your processor, which matters when the same machine is running your DAW.

Until a source is chosen and running, the widget shows Waiting for NDI... or its equivalent. Video widgets pause automatically while Zonea is hidden.

Saving and loading templates

Saving

Menu › Save As opens the template information panel. Two fields matter:

Library Folder
Which folder in your library to file it under: a name, not a path. Leave it blank and it goes to Unclassified.
Template Name
The name of the template itself, without any extension.

You can also record an Author name and a forum link, which travel with the template if you share it.

Press Save and a brief please wait... appears while everything is packed up.

Attaching your DAW's mapping file

A control surface is only half the job. The other half is the mapping file that teaches your software what everything does. Zonea can carry it: MIDI Map File attaches your DAW's mapping to the template, so it travels inside the same file. When someone loads your template, the mapping is unpacked automatically for them.

If you ever share a template, do this. It is the difference between "here is a layout" and "here is a working setup". Detach removes it again.

What a template contains

Everything: every widget and its settings, all 144 pages, your skin images, page backgrounds, per-page window handles, hotkeys and macros, and the surface's own settings. One file, self-contained.

You cannot pull files back out of a template

Template files are encrypted. A zip program can list what is inside, but nothing can be extracted without the key, so keep your original artwork somewhere separate if you will want to reuse it.

Reset All: the button to be careful with

The editor's Load & Reset panel has a third button, Reset All, sitting next to Load & Edit and Load & Touch. It restarts Zonea with an empty surface, which is how you start again from nothing, and it means anything unsaved is gone. Zonea asks you to confirm first. Save before you press it.

Loading

Either Load Latest on the main screen for the one you used last, Load for the browser, or Menu › Load & Reset from inside the editor. Choose Load & Touch to go straight to playing, or Load & Edit to keep building.

Templates always open on page 1.

Backups happen automatically, on overwrite

Save over an existing template and the old version is not thrown away. It is moved to a _Backups folder in your library, renamed with the date and time it was replaced. If you save something you regret, your previous version is there.

This is not a substitute for saving. It captures the version you replaced, at the moment you replaced it, nothing more.

Moving templates to another computer

Copy the single template file into any folder inside the other machine's Zonea template library. Artwork, page backgrounds and all settings come with it.

What does not travel is anything that belongs to Zonea's own settings on each computer rather than to the surface: hardware MIDI device choices, the MIDI engine, monitor placement, the OSC/HTTP/OBS connection settings and everything else in Global settings.

Window handles do travel inside the file — but they point at programs and screen positions as they were on the original machine, so on a different computer you will usually need to re-assign them.

Different screen, different resolution

Templates scale automatically to whatever screen they land on. The save panel shows the resolution a template was designed at and, right after loading, whether it arrived scaled to fit this screen.

A layout designed for a wide screen and opened on a squarer one will fit, but the proportions will not be what you drew. If you regularly use two very different screens, it is worth keeping a version made for each.

Global settings

Config holds the settings that belong to Zonea itself rather than to any widget.

Editor

Right-Click Opens Editor
On by default. Turn it off before a performance so a stray right-click cannot drop you into edit mode mid-show.
Editor Follow Mouse
On: the editor opens wherever your cursor is. Off: it always opens where you last left it.
Large Handles
Makes the selection handles noticeably bigger (about 40 % larger). If you build with your fingers rather than a mouse, turn this on.
Keep Cursor Visible On Touch
On by default. Windows normally hides the mouse pointer the moment you use the touchscreen and only brings it back when you move the mouse, so after touching a widget your pointer would simply vanish. With this on, the pointer stays visible, parked exactly where your mouse actually is; it does not jump to where you touched. Turn it off to let Windows hide the pointer as before.
Editor Hotkey
The key that opens and closes the editor, Escape by default. Press Set, then press the key you want. A single key only, no combinations.

Application

Always On Top
Off by default, and usually right that way: it lets you Alt+Tab to your DAW on the same computer. Turn it on for kiosk-style setups where nothing should ever cover the surface.
Do Not Steal Focus
Off by default. When on, touching a widget no longer makes Zonea the active window: the program you are driving keeps focus and stays highlighted, exactly as if you had never touched the screen.

Turn this on if you run Zonea on a second touchscreen beside a DAW. It is also what lets widget hotkeys reach that DAW: keystrokes always go to whichever window is active, so if touching the button pulls focus to Zonea, they never arrive.

The editor and the main screen still take focus normally, so you can always type in them.
Handle Windows When Unhide
After un-hiding Zonea, external windows with assigned handles are put back in their proper places.
Enable Multiple Instances
Allows several copies of Zonea at once, one per touchscreen on the same machine.
MIDI Engine
How Zonea creates its virtual MIDI port. Classic MIDI driver (the default) uses the bundled driver and names the port Zonea-1; it works on Windows 10 and 11. Windows MIDI Services uses Microsoft’s new MIDI system (Windows 11 only) and names the port plain Zonea.

The switch applies immediately, no restart — just enable the new port name in your music software afterwards. Note that the classic Zonea-1 entry deliberately stays in your DAW’s port list after the switch (removing a port live can freeze software that has it open), so make sure your software is pointed at the port that matches your engine.

You do not need this. The classic driver works out of the box. Windows MIDI Services is offered for two specific reasons: it is multi-client, so several programs can use Zonea’s port at the same time, which the classic driver cannot do; and the port exists on its own from Windows logon, so a DAW opened before Zonea (even before Zonea has run at all) still sees it. If neither is your case, leave this selector alone.

Nothing to install. Zonea talks directly to the MIDI service built into Windows 11 24H2 or newer — keep Windows Update applied and it is already there. Microsoft’s separate “runtime” download, which earlier versions relied on, is no longer needed, and Zonea never installs anything of Microsoft’s. On Windows 10 or an older Windows the engine is not there: if you select it, Zonea reports that the port could not be created and stays on the classic driver. On the 32-bit build the selector is greyed out altogether, because Windows MIDI Services has no 32-bit version. (The ARM build is the opposite case: Windows MIDI Services is its only engine and the selector is fixed there.) If you hit any problem with this engine, please report it on the forum.

Behind the scenes, a tiny helper named ZoneaMidiHost.exe (“Zonea MIDI Port Host”) starts with Windows and creates the Zonea port at logon, before any program looks for MIDI devices; it is what keeps the port alive while Zonea is closed. You will see it in Task Manager: that is normal, it is part of Zonea, it uses a few megabytes and has no window. If Windows’ MIDI service ever restarts, the port is recreated and Zonea reconnects by itself within seconds, nothing to relaunch.

If you run several instances of Zonea, they all share the single port Zonea, so your DAW only has one port to configure — note that MIDI arriving from the DAW then reaches every open instance. With the classic driver each instance gets its own port instead (Zonea-1, Zonea-2…).
Global Transparency / Opacity amount
Marks this template as a see-through one and sets how far: the background of the surface becomes transparent so the program underneath shows through, while your widgets stay solid. Tick the box and set the amount here, then turn the effect on and off at any time from Menu › Transparency in the editor. Transparency is always remembered per template, so a template built to sit over your music software opens see-through while an ordinary one opens solid.
Load Animation
The entrance animation widgets play when a template loads or a page changes, with a duration and a Test button to preview it. Saved with the template.

Windows Overlay Protection

Four switches, all off by default, that stop Windows from interrupting you. On a touchscreen, a stray swipe near an edge can throw the taskbar or a system panel over your surface at the worst possible moment.

  • Disable Taskbar · Disable Start Menu · Disable Quick Settings · Disable Notifications

All of them are restored automatically when you hide or close Zonea. If Zonea ever crashes, the taskbar and Start menu are repaired the next time Zonea starts. You will not be left with a broken Windows.

Touch Optimization

Four switches, all on by default, that remove Windows behaviours designed for browsing the web and unhelpful on a control surface: the long-press right-click, flick gestures that turn a fast fader move into a navigation swipe, edge swipes that pull in Task View or the notification centre, and the Windows Ink workspace. Each is labelled (Restart Windows) as a reminder of what it takes to apply, and the two that also need administrator rights say (Admin, Restart Windows).

These change Windows itself, not just Zonea

They adjust Windows-wide settings, which is why two of them ask you to run Zonea as administrator once. After that they stick and you can run normally.

You must restart Windows for these to take effect, not just Zonea. Change them all in one go, restart once, and you are done.

Leave them on unless something else on your machine needs the standard behaviour back.

One note on Press & Hold: the long-press right-click is already switched off inside Zonea whatever you do here, so this switch is about removing it everywhere else in Windows too.

Also worth doing on day one: turn off Windows' multi-finger gestures

Separate from the switches above, Windows watches the touchscreen for its own gestures made with two, three or four fingers — taps and swipes that switch apps, open Task View or show the desktop. They are not compatible with performance playing: with several fingers riding faders and pads at once, Windows can read your playing as one of these gestures and pull another window over your surface mid-set. Zonea cannot turn them off for you, so do it once by hand: open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touch and switch off Three- and four-finger touch gestures. It applies immediately, no restart needed.

Touch Mode

Normal Mouse
Standard Windows behaviour. The default, and right for a single touchscreen.
Prevent Cursor Jump
Stops the mouse pointer leaping to wherever you touch. If you use a mouse and the touchscreen together (mouse in your DAW, fingers on Zonea), this keeps the pointer where you left it.

Two things that trip people up

Use the left Ctrl and Shift. The right-hand keys do not trigger editor shortcuts.

If you rebind the editor key away from Escape, Escape then does nothing at all rather than falling back to anything. Your new key is the only way in.

There is no keyboard shortcut for changing pages and none for quitting. Pages change from your own on-screen buttons, the editor's page grid, or the five-finger gesture; quitting is the main screen's Quit button (a button with the Quit page target takes you back to that main screen, not out of Zonea).

The ARM version

Zonea comes in two builds: one for ordinary Intel and AMD computers, and one for ARM machines such as newer Surface and Snapdragon laptops. Install the one that matches your computer: they are separate installers and the wrong one will not work properly. (At the time of writing the ARM installer is coming soon; the download page offers the standard build.)

Not sure? Settings › System › About and look at System type. If it says ARM, you need the ARM build. Almost everyone else needs the standard one.

Everything in this manual applies to both. These are the differences:

Video: OMT only

On ARM, OMT is the only video source available. NDI and Spout do not work: the components they need have never been made for ARM processors.

The widgets are still visible, and that is confusing

The NDI and Spout entries still appear in the editor on ARM, with all their settings. They simply never find anything: the source list stays empty, and if you place one and try to connect it will show a technical message such as "NdiHost.exe not found". That message means this feature is not available on ARM. Nothing is broken and nothing is missing from your installation.

The same applies to templates made on an Intel machine: if one contains NDI or Spout widgets, they will load but stay blank on ARM. Use OMT instead, which does the same job over the network.

External UI Display (capturing a region of another program's window) works normally on ARM.

MIDI: Windows 11 required

The two builds create their MIDI connection in different ways. The standard build installs a MIDI driver (and can optionally use Windows MIDI Services too, with the MIDI Engine option in Global settings); the ARM build uses Windows MIDI Services always, because the driver has no ARM version.

For you this means:

  • Windows 11 24H2 or newer is required on ARM: Windows MIDI Services is the only MIDI engine available there, because the classic driver has no ARM version. There is nothing to install — the MIDI service ships with Windows 11 itself and Zonea talks to it directly (see MIDI Engine). Any problem with it, please report it on the forum.
  • The port is called plain Zonea: Windows MIDI Services ports drop the -1 that the standard build's classic driver uses. Enable that name in your DAW.
  • The ARM installer does not include the MIDI driver step.
  • Nothing to configure. Zonea chooses the right method for your machine on its own.
If your DAW cannot see Zonea on an ARM machine

Make sure Windows Update is fully applied: the MIDI service ships with Windows 11 itself. This is the first thing to look at on ARM, and Zonea will not warn you if it is missing. Also note that some older DAWs that only support the original Windows MIDI system may not see the port at all, even when everything is working.

MIDI hardware

Physical MIDI devices work on ARM and appear in the device lists as usual. One ARM-only quirk:

  • Long device names are cut short in the list, at about 31 characters. Two devices with similar long names can look identical.

The Mac Bridge is not available on ARM either, for the same reason. Everything else (the editor, all widgets, licensing, templates, pages, skins, hotkeys, touch settings) behaves identically on both.

Troubleshooting

The Zonea port disappeared (Windows MIDI Services)

The ZoneaMidiHost helper and Zonea itself both watch the port and recreate it on their own, so a port that vanishes normally comes back within seconds, and Zonea reconnects to it by itself. If every program that lists MIDI devices freezes, not just Zonea, then Windows' own MIDI service is stuck: open a Command Prompt as administrator, run sc queryex MidiSrv to get its PID and then taskkill /PID <pid> /F. Windows restarts the service by itself, and the Zonea port comes back on its own. If you need maximum reliability for a show, the classic MIDI driver remains the safe choice.

My software does not see Zonea

Check the MIDI Port Name on the main screen (normally Zonea-1, or plain Zonea when the MIDI Engine is Windows MIDI Services) and enable exactly that name in your software's MIDI settings. If it does not appear at all, restart Windows: on a fresh install the MIDI connection is not complete until you do. On ARM, see The ARM version.

Touching a widget does nothing

You are in Edit mode, where widgets deliberately ignore touch. Press Escape or PERFORM to go live, or hold Shift + X to test without leaving the editor.

My software sees the wrong control

Two widgets are sharing a channel and number. Remember that XY Pads, VU meters and touch-signalling encoders quietly use more than one number, so they can collide with a neighbour you thought was free.

A fader jumps or runs backwards

On an encoder, the Encoder Mode does not match what your software expects. Try the other relative modes: one of them will be right.

A VU meter stays still

Check the numbering: a one-needle meter listens on exactly the number you set; multi-needle meters spread across consecutive numbers (see the widget reference). Also confirm your software is actually sending meter data out to the Zonea port. If the meter was built on an old Zonea version, raise its number by 1: older versions listened one number higher.

A button's hotkey does nothing

Three usual causes: the On checkbox in the Hotkeys tab is not ticked (it is off by default); the key you recorded is one of the unsupported ones such as a numpad key; or the target program lost focus the moment you touched the button. Turn on Do Not Steal Focus in Config, which is what keeps your DAW active while you play the surface.

My DAW stops being highlighted when I touch a widget

Turn on Do Not Steal Focus in Config. Without it, touching the surface makes Zonea the active window, exactly as clicking any other program would.

A macro works only sometimes

It is running faster than the target program can follow. Add + Delay steps of 100–200 ms between the keystrokes.

Widgets do not light up from my DAW

Enable Zonea-1 as an output in your software as well as an input, and make sure the widget's MIDI IN address matches what your software sends. For buttons, try Follow Host.

The five-finger gesture does nothing

It only works on a page with a live video background running. On an ordinary page it is inactive regardless of the setting.

Playing with several fingers switches apps or hides Zonea

Windows' own multi-finger gestures are firing. Switch off Three- and four-finger touch gestures in Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touch. See Config for the details.

An External UI Display shows nothing

The source program must be running and not minimised. Some windows, streaming apps especially, are protected by Windows against being captured, and nothing can show those.

Zonea closed by itself and I lost my work

Versions before 3.1.8 had a 45-minute trial session that closed the app. That limit is gone: since 3.1.8 the trial never closes itself (Performance mode is simply limited to pages 1 and 2). If this happened to you, update to the current version.

I saved over the wrong template

Look in the _Backups folder in your template library. The version you replaced is there with the date and time on it.

A keyboard shortcut is not responding

Use the left Ctrl and Shift keys. The right-hand ones do not trigger editor shortcuts.

A skin image looks stretched

Images fill the whole widget. Make your image at the size the Skins panel reports for that widget, and use square images for round controls.

A Touch Optimization setting does not seem to do anything

Those settings change Windows itself, so they only take effect after you restart Windows. Restarting Zonea alone is not enough. Two of them also need you to have run Zonea as administrator once.

The taskbar keeps appearing over my surface

Turn on Disable Taskbar in Config, under Windows Overlay Protection.

3.1.9AUG 2026Fixes: slider MIDI input, button blink visuals, editor inspector
  • Sliders and knobs now receive MIDI on their configured channel and number. Incoming MIDI was internally locked to channel 1 / CC 0, so with several faders on different channels, feedback for one fader could move them all. Existing templates heal automatically the first time they load.
  • Buttons with Blink no longer lose their icon or label. Turning a blinking button off during the dark phase of the blink left its icon and text invisible until the template was reloaded. Fixed for every way a button can turn off: touch, incoming MIDI, groups, OSC and OBS feedback.
  • Colour changes always reach a button's text and icon now, even after the button has blinked or been switched off remotely.
  • Selecting buttons in Edit mode no longer alters their setup. Clicking from button to button could silently untick Follow Host or flip the Push/Toggle mode of the selected buttons. Settings now change only when you change them.
3.1.8AUG 2026Trial without time limits, free mode with any version, Ardour joins the free program
  • The trial no longer has a time limit. The 30-minute demo notice and the 45-minute forced close are gone. Design mode is completely unrestricted (all 144 pages, save and load freely); Performance mode runs on pages 1 and 2, and going further simply offers the full license. See The trial.
  • Free mode now works with any version of the partner open-source apps: older releases, the current one, and new ones from the day they come out, with no Zonea update needed. Self-built copies and the OBS edition from Steam count too. See Free with open-source apps.
  • Ardour joins the free program: while Ardour is running, Zonea runs fully unlocked, like with Mixxx, LMMS, OpenMPT and OBS.
  • The licence line now reads a neutral Free (OSS) instead of naming the app that unlocked it.
3.1.7AUG 2026Bitwig Studio support, DAW control, Device Panel, self-reliant Windows MIDI Services engine
  • Windows MIDI Services with nothing extra to install: the optional MIDI engine now talks directly to the MIDI service built into Windows 11 (24H2 or newer) — Microsoft’s separate runtime download is no longer needed. The Zonea port now exists on its own from logon: a DAW opened before Zonea sees it, it stays after closing Zonea, and if Windows’ MIDI service restarts, the port is recreated and Zonea reconnects by itself within seconds. Several DAWs can use the port at the same time. On Windows 10 the classic driver is used automatically. See MIDI Engine.
  • Bitwig Studio support: the clip grid now works with Bitwig Studio through the new bundled Zonea Bitwig controller script, with real clip colours and names, scenes, stops, and a launcher highlight that matches the grid exactly. The widget was renamed Live Clips → Clip Grid now that it speaks both DAWs. See the Bitwig Studio setup.
  • New DAW tab in the Events panel: buttons drive the transport (Play, Stop, session Record, Metronome, Overdub, Tap Tempo, Tempo +1/-1, Undo, Redo, launch Quantize) and Mute/Solo/Arm/Select ring tracks, all lighting up with the DAW's real state; sliders and knobs ride Volume, Pan or Sends of a ring track, the Selected track or the Master, bidirectionally at high resolution. Works with both DAWs, no MIDI mapping needed. See the DAW tab.
  • Grid navigation buttons: any button can move the Clip Grid's viewport one track or scene per tap (Ring Left/Right/Up/Down), and the highlight frame follows in the DAW.
  • Flip: a new Clip Grid option that transposes the grid to match Bitwig's Arrange view (tracks as rows). Visual only; the clip mapping does not change.
  • Mixer controls on the Clip Grid: an optional header row of track names that select their track, and Mute / Solo rows (with a Solo Is Cue label option) below the clips, all lit with the DAW's real state; the scene column can also sit on the left, matching Bitwig. See the Clip Grid.
  • New Device Panel widget: eight knobs that always control the selected device in Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio, with the device's name, previous/next device and parameter-page buttons in the header, and each parameter's real name and DAW-formatted value above its knob. The knobs show the true position but turn relative, so they never jump. See Device Panel.
  • Device Panel, rounder: a new DAW Perform category in the Objects panel now groups the Clip Grid and the Device Panel; the panel can lay its knobs out in two rows of four (the default for new panels); Classic Knobs and Classic Buttons draw it in the style of Zonea's Knob widget, with Stroke setting the ring thickness; the knob centre shows the position as 0–100%; in Live, on/off parameters appear as buttons and stepped selectors draw division marks on the arc; and a double-tap returns a parameter to its default, in either DAW.
  • Main button on the Clip Grid: with Track Buttons and Scene Buttons on, the header's corner selects the Main (master) track — and the Device Panel follows the grid's track selection, master included, so your device knobs land on the master chain in one tap.
  • DAW scripts easier to install by hand: the installer now also leaves a copy of both DAW scripts in Documents\Zonea\DAW Scripts, with a README, for setups where Live's User Library or Bitwig's Controller Scripts folder lives in a custom location.
  • Readable clip names: typographic characters in clip names (curly apostrophes and quotes, long dashes, accented letters) now convert to their plain equivalents instead of showing "?", in both DAWs.
  • MIDI device choices no longer get lost: the hardware and virtual MIDI ports you tick are saved the moment you tick them, and a device that is missing or slow to appear at startup no longer erases your selection; Zonea keeps it and reconnects as soon as the device is back.
  • Clean exit: Zonea no longer leaves a background process running after you close it.
  • Main menu scaling on high-DPI screens: the main menu and the login panel in its bottom-left corner no longer appear at half size at times; their scale is now consistent whatever the monitor or startup timing.
3.1.6AUG 2026Steady cursor on multi-monitor touch, free with more open-source apps
  • Keep Cursor Visible On Touch, redesigned: while you touch, drag or hold widgets on the touchscreen, the mouse pointer on your other monitor stays visible and steady, with no blinking, and control returns to the real cursor the moment you stop touching or move the mouse.
  • The cursor never appears over the widget surface in Performance mode, no matter how it got there. Zonea's menus, panels and the editor keep the normal cursor.
  • Fixed phantom clicks on other applications: rapid taps on the touchscreen could fire a click under the mouse cursor on another monitor (selecting an audio event in a DAW, for example). Touch input can no longer send mouse events to other applications.
  • Free with more open-source apps: besides Mixxx, Zonea now also unlocks for free while LMMS, OpenMPT or OBS is running. The licence line shows which app unlocked it, for example OBS License. The free mode always targets the latest official release of each app. See Free with open-source apps.
3.1.5JUL 2026OSC, OBS Studio, HTTP, Live Clips for Ableton, MIDI engine choice
  • OSC: sliders, knobs, pads, buttons and encoders send and receive OSC with per-widget addresses, ranges and types, plus the new OSC Label widget that displays incoming text.
  • Live Clips grid for Ableton Live: a Launchpad-style clip grid in one widget, showing each clip's real colour, name and playing state via the bundled Zonea Live control-surface script. Scene buttons (with scene names), a stop row that can sit above or below the grid, Stop All, and glissando: slide a finger and every clip it crosses fires.
  • OBS Studio control: buttons switch scenes, record, stream and mute; sliders ride input volumes, in both directions, with your actual scenes and inputs listed right in the editor.
  • HTTP tab: any button can call a web API (vMix and similar): one address when it turns on, another when it turns off.
  • MIDI Engine option: choose between the classic MIDI driver (port Zonea-1) and Windows MIDI Services (port Zonea, Windows 11), switchable without restarting. At the time this engine relied on Microsoft's separate runtime and was considered experimental; since 3.1.7 it talks directly to Windows' built-in MIDI service and needs nothing extra. A helper process (ZoneaMidiHost.exe) owns the port with this engine, and several Zonea instances share one port.
  • Keep Cursor Visible On Touch: the mouse pointer no longer disappears when you use the touchscreen.
  • Fixes: startup can no longer freeze if the Windows MIDI system hangs; a one-needle VU meter now listens on exactly the number you set (it used to listen one higher); the installer registers firewall rules so networked features never pop a Windows prompt; widgets are properly cleaned up when loading a new template.
3.1.4JUL 2026Do Not Steal Focus, Touch Optimization corrections
  • Do Not Steal Focus (Config): touching a widget no longer takes focus away from the app you are driving. Your DAW stays highlighted and widget hotkeys reach it.
  • Touch Optimization cleaned up: removed four switches that never did anything, fixed the Flicks setting (it was inert), and corrected all labels to "(Restart Windows)".
3.1.3JUL 2026External UI and display-scaling fixes
  • External UI Display fixed on scaled screens: the widget now shows exactly the region you selected at any Windows display scale, double-click/double-tap confirms the capture as the instructions say, and a widget whose source is unavailable shows a clear status panel instead of turning invisible.
  • Templates saved on scaled displays no longer load at half size (re-save once to fix an affected template).
  • Touch no longer sends ghost clicks to other applications on multi-monitor setups with Prevent Cursor Jump enabled.
  • Reset All and the monitor-switch buttons now ask for confirmation, and templates from the old Emulator folder are migrated automatically.
3.1.2JUL 2026Stability: Windows shell, saving, high-DPI
  • Windows is never left broken: the taskbar and Start menu are restored on every exit, including crashes, and Zonea repairs a shell left hidden by a previous session.
  • Fixed a crash when saving with invalid characters in the template name or folder; failed saves now show an error instead of pretending they saved.
  • Always On Top is now optional and off by default: Alt-Tab to your DAW works like any normal window.
  • High-DPI fixes across the app: editor position, Identify overlays, splash screen and video widgets all render correctly on scaled displays.
3.1.0JUN 2026Emulator becomes Zonea
  • The application was renamed from Emulator to Zonea, with a new logo.
  • The MIDI port is now Zonea-1 (was Emulator-1). Re-enable it by its new name in your software.
  • Your data moved to Documents\Zonea; templates, licences and settings migrate automatically on first launch.
3.0.4MAR 2026Windows Overlay Protection, per-template animations
  • Windows Overlay Protection: four switches that stop the taskbar, Start menu, Quick Settings and notifications from covering your surface.
  • Per-template animations: the load animation and its duration are saved with each template.
  • Editor fixes: MIDI properties update correctly when switching widgets, encoder settings only show for encoders, and On checkboxes no longer look enabled when nothing is configured.
